Alumna Carol Franklin Accepts LAF Award
Longtime faculty member Carol Franklin (MLA’65), RLA, FASLA, a founding principal of Andropogon, accepted the 2018 Landscape Architecture Foundation Medal.
On May 17, 2018 in Washington, DC, the Landscape Architecture Foundation (LAF) hosted two events to showcase and celebrate leading-edge thinking and achievements in landscape architecture and sustainability: the LAF Innovation + Leadership Symposium and the 2018 LAF Awards Dinner. Many PennDesign faculty and alumni were in attednance as alumnus and longtime faculty member Carol Franklin (MLA’65), RLA, FASLA, a founding principal of Andropogon, accepted the 2018 LAF Medal.
“One of the great satisfactions of my career is that Ecological Design has become central to the profession,” said Franklin in her acceptance speech. “The people in this room . . . have been vital in bringing about this ”
Franklin was an adjunct professor in the Department of Landscape Architecture at Penn from 1972-2002, and taught cultural landscapes in the Graduate Program in Historic Preservation.
Franklin also cited the role of legendary faculty member Ian McHarg, who “gave us the premise that places are a unique blend of realities best understood by exploring the forces that shaped them.” McHarg’s revolutionary thinking underpins the recent formation of The Ian L. McHarg Center at PennDesign, which will launch officially with the 50th anniversary of McHarg's Design With Nature in the summer of 2019.
