Trolley Portal Gardens Celebration
3927 Woodland Ave, Philadelphia, PA 19104
PennDesign students and alumni are invited to celebrate the successful completion of a community development project right here in the University City neighborhood! Bob Kaufman (C’76, MCP’77) and Ken Weinstein, development partners with Philly Office Retail, spent over seven years working with University City District to transform the “concrete canyon” that was the trolley portal at 40th Street and Baltimore Avenue into a welcoming public space. As with The Porch at 30th Street Station, UCD embarked on an effort to convert the one-acre site into Trolley Portal Gardens, a public amenity—with greenery, benches, festoon lighting, and moveable tables and chairs. To animate the site, UCD worked closely with Bob and Ken to build Trolley Car Station, a new cafe/restaurant to attract pedestrians, neighbors, and commuters to a community destination. Bob is also a board member of the PennDesign Alumni Association (PDAA).
This celebration is the final session of a three-part series that has allowed PennDesign students and alumni to look behind the construction fencing and see the many steps involved in keeping a development project moving forward. Light snacks will be provided with a cash bar.
